History
The Village of Algonquin
The area along the scenic Fox River that is now the Village of Algonquin was originally a
popular fording place for wagon trains heading westward in the early 1800's. In fact, in
1834 it became the first settlement in McHenry County. The area soon became a busy
collecting point for farm and dairy goods on their way to Chicago markets. In the years
that followed, Algonquin proved not only to be a popular agricultural center, but a
popular summer vacation spot for residents of nearby Chicago as well.
The Village was incorporated in 1890 and today retains many of the aspects that originally
made it an attractive place for business and for family life; a scenic location on the
banks of the Fox River, small town charm and serenity, and proximity to the cultural and
business opportunities of Chicago.
